Inside Our Bespoke Atelier: How to Create a One-of-a-Kind Piece of Jewelry
Some jewelry you buy off the shelf. And then there's the kind you design yourself — a piece that exists because of a specific idea, a memory, a proposal, a promise. That's exactly what our bespoke atelier is for.
What is "bespoke," really?
Bespoke simply means made specifically for you, from scratch. Not a customized version of an existing design, but a piece built around your ideas from the very first sketch. Maybe it's an engagement ring inspired by your grandmother's ring. Maybe it's a pendant designed around a color that means something only to you. Maybe you simply couldn't find "the one" anywhere else, so you decided to create it.
At Longfield, our bespoke atelier is based right here in the Netherlands, where every piece is handcrafted by our own team. Not outsourced, not mass-produced. Just skilled hands, good materials, and a lot of attention to detail.
How the process actually works
We keep it personal and refreshingly low-pressure. Here's roughly what to expect:
1. The conversation. It starts with you telling us what you're picturing — a rough idea, a Pinterest board or a piece you saw and loved. We ask questions, you share inspiration, we start narrowing things down.
2. Choosing your materials. This is where things get exciting. You'll choose between 14k or 18k gold, and decide on yellow, white or rose gold. Then comes the diamond decision: lab-grown or natural, white or colored — completely your call, guided by our team every step of the way. We'll talk you through carat, cut, clarity and color so the choice feels informed, not overwhelming.
3. Design & sketches. Our team translates your ideas into a concrete design, often with sketches or renders so you can see (and adjust) before anything is made.
4. Handcrafting. Once the design is approved, your piece is handcrafted in our own atelier, using the finest gold and certified diamonds. This isn't rushed. It's done with the same care you'd expect from a piece meant to last generations.
5. The reveal. And then, the best part: your piece arrives, entirely unique, made exactly the way you imagined it... Or better.
Why go bespoke instead of buying ready-made?
Ready-made collections are great when something in them just works for you. But bespoke is for when:
- You want a piece with real personal meaning: an engagement ring, a family heirloom reimagined, a milestone gift.
- You have a very specific idea that doesn't exist anywhere else.
- You want full control over every detail: metal, diamond type, color, setting, size.
- You simply want the story of "I designed this myself",which, let's be honest, is pretty special.
It's also, quite often, where our wedding section and bespoke atelier meet: many of our engagement rings and wedding bands for him and her start life as a bespoke conversation, especially when a natural diamond, a specific gold tone, or a very particular design detail is part of the picture.
Transparency, even in bespoke
We know that designing a piece you've never seen finished can feel like a leap of trust, especially when buying online. That's why we keep the process transparent from start to finish, you'll know exactly what gold you're getting, what diamond you're choosing (and its certificate, from 0.5 carat and up), and who is actually making your piece. No mystery, no middlemen, just honest craftsmanship.
Ready to start designing?
Whether you have a fully-formed idea or just a vague feeling you can't quite put into words yet, that's more than enough to start. Our bespoke atelier exists for exactly that first, slightly nervous, very exciting conversation.
