Colored Diamonds: The Beautiful World Beyond White

White diamonds get all the attention, but let's be honest, some of the most breathtaking stones out there aren't white at all. Blue, yellow, pink, champagne, cognac... colored diamonds are having a well-deserved moment, and once you've seen one in person, it's hard to go back.

What actually makes a diamond colored?

Color in a diamond comes down to trace elements or structural quirks that occur during formation. A touch of nitrogen can create warm yellow tones. Boron gives a diamond its blue hue. Structural distortions in the crystal lattice can produce pink or brown shades. It's essentially nature's (or, in the case of lab-grown, science's) way of adding a signature to the stone.

In natural diamonds, these colored varieties are exceptionally rare. Some of the rarest gemstones on earth, which is exactly why a natural fancy colored diamond can carry a serious price tag. Lab-grown colored diamonds, on the other hand, are grown with that same color intentionally cultivated in a controlled setting, which means the rich, saturated tones you'd normally only find in a handful of natural stones become genuinely attainable.

Our take: color should feel personal, not just pretty

At Longfield, we love white diamonds as much as the next jeweler, but we've built a good part of our collection around colored lab-grown diamonds specifically because they let people wear something that feels like them. A cool blue oval pendant. A warm pink-toned ring. These aren't just alternative options — for a lot of our clients, they are the whole point.

A few of the colors you'll come across most often:

  • Blue — cool, clean, quietly striking. Stunning set in white or yellow gold.
  • Pink — romantic without being overly sweet, especially in smaller carats as accent stones.
  • Green — bold, earthy, unmistakably confident.
  • Champagne & cognac — warm, endlessly wearable. A gorgeous match with yellow or rose gold.

Lab-grown or natural colored diamonds — is there a difference in choosing?

Chemically and visually, no. A colored lab-grown diamond is every bit as real, hard, and brilliant as its natural counterpart, and to the eye, they're indistinguishable. The real difference is accessibility. A natural fancy pink or blue diamond of any real size is exceptionally rare and priced accordingly, often reserved for serious collectors. A lab-grown version in that same striking shade is realistically within reach, which is exactly why our own collection is built on lab-grown colored stones.

That said, if a natural colored diamond is what you're after - say, for a bespoke heirloom piece or a wedding ring with a particular story behind it — that's absolutely something we can help source and guide you through in our bespoke atelier, where both natural and lab-grown stones are on the table.

How to choose your color

Honestly, this is the fun part. A few things worth thinking about:

  1. Skin tone & gold color. Warm tones (champagne, cognac, yellow) tend to sing next to yellow and rose gold. Cooler tones (blue, certain pinks) often look striking against white gold or platinum.
  2. How often you'll wear it. A colored stone as an everyday ring? Go for something versatile, like a soft champagne. Saving it for a statement piece? Lean into a bold blue or vivid yellow.
  3. What it means to you. Some people choose a color because it matches their birthstone family, others because it simply makes them happiest. Both are equally valid reasons.

Whether you already know exactly which shade speaks to you, or you want to see a few side by side before deciding, our team is happy to walk you through the options — in our existing collection or as part of a fully bespoke design.
